Common Mint Marks
The city of Rome was the primary mint of the Empire. Throughtout the history of the Empire various mints were used. This mints often put their mark on the coins they produced. The mint marks can be found in the exerge of a coin. These marks were a series of letters used to designate the mint city, with additional letter used to designate the officina of the mint, or the actual mint maker. For example, MOSTP: MOST is the mint mark for the city of Ostia. The P represents the primus or first officina of the mint.
